STORY TWENTY-EIGHT

Chapter 1

“Nina Palmers, please step forward for processing,” Nina was startled when she heard the voice over the intercom. She shuffled a bit in her seat, the handcuffs making it a little difficult to stand, but after only a few moments of getting her bearings, she rose from her hard, uncomfortable seat in the lobby of the police station and made her way toward the glassed off area with the sections for processing criminals. She supposed that was what she was now: a criminal. Granted, she was brought in for petty robbery, and it was her first offense, so it wasn't as though she had to worry about a long jail sentence or anything. Still, a night in prison would no doubt make her think twice about stealing nice lingerie. Or anything, for that matter.

Last time she decides to take a dare because of one of her friends, she thought sourly as she shuffled forward to the clerk that was supposed to check her in and get her onto the next processing checkpoint. Her friends weren't here in lockup with her, as they all ran off before she had even attempted stealing the damn negligee she'd had her eye on for a while anyway. Some friends they were, when she called and asked them to bail her out, they promised they'd come tonight to pick her up, but she hasn't seen hide or hair of any of them just yet. Those bastards. She just hoped they showed up at some point, else she might be spending more than one night here. That thought didn't sit well with her.

“Stand on the yellow line and wait for the door to open,” said the clerk through the microphone embedded in the bulletproof glass. The voice on the other end came across as harsh and uncaring, and it was hard not to glare at the woman who looked bored to be there as she sat behind the glass, judging everyone that came through. Like she was doing anything worthwhile in her life, she thought spitefully as the door gave off a shrill beep and swung open.

Walking was a little bit difficult because of the ankle cuffs that chained her legs together, but she managed to make it to the medical checkpoint without falling flat on her face, something that she felt deserved a pat on the back. Which she would have, if she could do much of anything with her hands at the moment. These damned handcuffs were beginning to be a pain in the ass, she thought with a quiet grumble.

There, she found an equally bored nurse sitting there as though she were struggling not to fall asleep. Beside her was a police officer standing guard over her, a stern look on his face as he let his eyes rove over her. Somehow, she got the inclination that he certainly wasn't judging her or how she got here – not with that particular kind of staring. She tried not to squirm at what the intensity of his eyes was doing to her as he stepped closer to her.
